Meet the Musgraves

Aynsley J. Musgrave has 25 years of international riding and training experience. After receiving his degree in Equine Science and his Instructor Certification from the British Horse Society in 1988, Aynsley built upon his training at some of the top yards in England and the Middle East, riding show jumpers, dressage and steeplechasers, and whipped for the South and West Wilts Hunt, England. Aynsley moved to the U.S. in 1993, and rode for international eventers Ralph Hill and Jan Bynny in Chicago and Ocala. Relocating to Middleburg in 1996, Aynsley started Deerfield, his own training business for dressage, eventing and show jumpers.

Suzanne Musgrave started riding hunters and jumpers before focusing on dressage. She restarted racehorses and worked polo ponies in Chicago and Palm Beach to finance her training with dressage master Hubert Rohr and Olympic show jumpers Tim Grubb and Chris Kappler. A catch-ride on a naughty pony started her interest in eventing and brought her skills together. While she is an active competitor, Suzanne’s main interest has been teaching children and adult amateurs. Since she started teaching in 1990, students have benefited from her positive approach and commitment to detail. She enjoys making correct and confident riders, with outstanding performance in and out of the show ring, and a focus on good horsemanship and sportsmanship.

For Riders

From short stirrup to dressage basics to the jumper ring to a three-day event, whatever your goals, Deerfield will help you get there.

Trainers Suzanne and Aynsley Musgrave emphasize a shared philosophy:

  • the basics of a balanced seat and independent aids are essential,
  • training should be enjoyed by both horse and rider,
  • safety is paramount.

Lessons

Each discipline has something to offer. We start kids in the hunter ring, where they learn control, good form, and good sportsmanship. As a rider develops strength and balance, they learn the principles of dressage, while cross-country jumping gives riders confidence to ride forward to the jumps and strengthens the position. Advanced riders fine tune their skills on the flat and over fences, with instruction in dressage, equitation, show jumping, and cross country jumping. Whatever your level, or level of aspiration, Team Deerfield offers an encouraging and supportive learning environment.

Coaching at Competitions

Frequent trips off the property for shows, schooling and long hacks keep horses fresh and offer riders new challenges and the opportunity to polish new skills. We compete at schooling hunter, jumper and combined training events for experienced riders needing a tune up or riders who are just starting to show. We also attend many regional USEA and USHJA competitions throughout the spring, summer and fall. To help riders perform at their best, Deerfield offers coaching in the warm up rings and course walks on cross country.

“You can always spot Deerfield students: prepared, organized, and well-turned out.” -Helen, dressage judge and eventing TD
